The Federal Trade Commission is warning consumers about a new government imposter scam where scammers pretend to call from the National Institutes of Health. According to the FTC, they’ve reports indicating scammers are telling people they’ve been selected to receive a $14,000 grant from NIH. To obtain it, scammers tell the victim to pay a fee through an iTunes gift card, Green Dot card or by giving their bank account number.
If you ever receive a phone call like this, hang up. The federal government does not call to give people grants. NIH does give grants to researchers, but those are for public purposes and must be applied for.
Remember, the federal government will not call you and demand personal information like a bank account or your Social Security number. Be cautious of any caller asking to be paid via wire transfer, iTunes gift card, or a prepaid card.
