scam-alert-pic-150x150Did you ever get called to jury duty and fail to show up? If you missed jury duty, or you’re not sure if you did, beware of scam phone calls asking you to pay up or go to jail.

BBB warns of such a scam being reported by Bexar County Jury Services.

Bexar County residents have been receiving calls claiming they have missed jury duty, have outstanding warrants and are about to be arrested. The calls have been made randomly to Bexar County citizens–some of whom had been summoned to jury duty, and some who hadn’t.

The scammer tells the citizen to immediately pay anywhere between $2,000 and $4,000 in fines or a sheriff will pick them up and arrest them. Victims are being told to go to a store and pick up a Green Dot card or money order to pay the fine.

Don’t send money to these scammers! If you get a call like that, hang up. If you think you may have missed jury duty, call the appropriate authority directly. Bexar County states that the Central Jury does not make phone calls, but sends a letter in the mail if someone misses jury duty. The county does not make calls requesting money from potential jurors.

If you live in Bexar County and have received a call someone about missing jury duty, call the Central Jury Office at (210) 335-2667.
