Ever wonder how you end up on email distribution lists for products that you’ve never even heard of? Thanks to modern technology, there are computer programs available that make it much easier to send you spam emails.
A “web crawler” spider or bot may be used to pinpoint email addresses off of websites. While a “spambot” actually sends out the spam email, by using made-up email addresses. While these programs have different names and are used for different functions, both have the same intention — to get a hold of your email address and spam the heck out of your email account!
Spammers can also collect your email from chat rooms, websites, customer lists, newsgroups, and viruses which harvest users’ address books, and then sold to other spammers.
The best way to block such junk emails is to have a good spam filter. Also, limit the places you post your email address and read privacy policies for websites you visit. And never, ever respond to spam emails.
Unfortunately, spam emails are not going away anytime soon. Your best protection against it is to be aware of the problem and know how to protect yourself against it.
