Over the past few weeks, we have received quite a few phone calls from consumers looking for more information about mail solicitations regarding sewer line coverage for their home. The letters are coming from multiple companies reminding them that the area from their home to their property line is their responsibility should the line clog or break. For a monthly fee, the companies are offering additional coverage to save on the cost of repairs.
The most important thing to remember if you receive a similar mailing is that the coverage offered by these companies is optional. It is up to you to decide if the coverage is valuable to you as a home owner. In order to help you make that decision, here are a few helpful suggestions:
1) Check the company’s BBB Business Review to see their rating and any past government actions or advertising concerns BBB has found.
2) Review your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if sewer line coverage is already provided. Contact your insurance company to ask how this coverage would work in conjunction with your current policy.
3) If you are leaning toward purchasing the coverage, read the contract very carefully and make sure you have a clear understanding of it, especially if there are exclusions.
4) Make sure the company has a reasonable cancellation policy in case you change your mind after signing up.
